Thou shalt not have strange gods before me
Thou shalt not make for thyself any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; thou shalt not bow down to them or serve them. Exodus 20:2-5
You’d think this one would be a no-brainer.
I was listening to a homily the other day by Father Mike Schmidt about the most common creator of false Gods: Security. He talks about how the perceived desire for security, or stability or control can move you further and further away from God. It is that desperate need for control. The belief that if you just save enough money, or find enough time, or stay away from enough risk, or maintain your house in perfect order that you will be in control. But the reality is, we are not in control. Doing this not only elevates our actions, but puts ourselves as the center if the universe. We become the golden calf. We are our own false God.
I have struggled with surrender. At first, I thought it was giving up of what makes me me However, recently, through the Holy Spirit, I have had a more intuitive understanding — that it precisely what will make me become me. And it is so beautiful. A warm and vibrating light moving just below the surface of us all. Like magma beneath our human crust.
And this is true because God became man.
“So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.” — Galatians 4:7
I am one of the family!
But I am still a slave. ( There’s one every family, right. )
“Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. John 8:34
My false Gods have quite the hold on me. I fret away the time. I hid within after work drinks. I lay idle in distraction. I bury joy. I build distance. Funny, when I find myself in this pattern I quickly lose my sense of purpose. Yes, I know that is what God has been saying all along.
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41
It is time once again to make straight the way of the Lord. God help me so.
