Hi God. It’s me Heather. Yeah, I am still here. Been living a huge portion of my life in the shallows of the day to day, and I gotta say, it’s unfulfilling.
Still listening though. And a whole series of your teaching are screaming out to me.
The Word of God is a remarkable thing. You doubt God exists? Read or listen to the Scriptures. It is ridiculously simple — the words, phrases, stories, language, structure. It is completely accessible. Universal, even. :). And it makes all things new. I am amazed at how much the it (God) has changed how I view myself. How I see others. Hell, the other night I was making dinner, I realized, I know the meaning of life. Me, Heather, stirring polenta in Fairfax, knows that Jesus Christ conquered sin. He conquered death. He is the beginning and the end. That there is no end. And me, and you, and everyone in the middle are here to be his light on earth. To love. To fail. And to try forever to be a saint. So we can leave and new people can take our place and change the world. That’s really it. That is the Truth we were made for and made to hear.
God is drawn to us by our sins. Wow. This one has been huge for me the past few weeks. Weakness is a good thing. It is an opportunity to grow closer to God. Our broken nature is what God is here for. He sees how much better it can be for us and tries to bring us there, and show us the way. I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance.
God sought out Adam and Eve in the garden after the fall. “Where are you?” God asked. And they hid themselves because they were naked and afraid. He went to Matthew’s house, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice” . He came to the adulteress “Go your way, and from now on sin no more”. He acknowledged Thomas’s doubt “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing” And, most profoundly, He came down from Heaven to reconcile us to God and then called us all to him through his brokenness on the cross.
We need to love our weakness. Use it to sin no more. And to avoid the occasion of sin.
Finally, most of the things that frustrate us in life are our weaknesses. Everything that grates on me, exists in me. It’s up to me to make the most of it.
From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once regarded Christ from a human point of view, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation;the old has passed away, behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, God was in Christ reconcilingthe world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. _ Corinthians 5:16-19
